The second contest of the year was held on Saturday 31st March. 70 competitors took to the water in a 2-3ft southerly swell that was torn apart by a strong SE wind that arrived around mid-morning. The increasing wind didn’t decrease the scores being recorded by the surfers who advanced to the finals of the 7 divisions contested.
Jesse Lowe surfed well enough in the A-Grade final to get the nod from the judges. In doing so Jesse relegated his good mate Jack Joy into second place for the second month, with Ben Leary claiming third. Cooper Williams covered his chiselled rig in a springsuit and won B-Grade from Steve Bewely and Beau Sutcliffe. TM did similar but without the chiselled rig to win O/35’s with Gordon Parish and Bruno Cav filling the minor places. Dave Clemisha turned up ready to perform but wasn’t required to hit the water due to a lack of competitors, but he still collected the maximum 100 points on offer.

Thanks to Steve Harro, Marvo, Blake and Sue Levett for helping out by judging more than your fair share of heats during the two contests. Its efforts like these that make the contest day enjoyable for all competitors.
This year QBC has had a dramatic increase in the number of junior members joining our club. The committee welcomes all new members and we look forward to seeing you integrate into the QBC way of life and surfing. For those of you new to the club I will run through a few points that may be of assistance to you on the about page.
The last weekend in February saw a team of 8 surfers fly north to the Gold Coast for the Kirra Teams titles. Our team consisting of Nick Riley, Jack Joy, Danga Butler, The Drake, Daniel Karen, Ben Hamilton, Jesse Lowe and Sam Page surfed competitively finishing midway in the 32 team field. Unfortunately the main story that broke over the weekend was the mindless assault that took place late on the Sunday night. Sam Page was celebrating his 21st birthday at a Gold Coast night club when he was assaulted from behind by a bouncer. Sam fell backwards down a flight of stairs suffering massive head injuries before being taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma. Days past before Sam regained consciousness, finally leaving hospital almost 2 weeks after the incident. Sam is currently recuperating at home and will hopefully make a full recovery. I speak on behalf of the whole of QBC when wishing Sam a full and speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing your head with that cheeky smile in the water again soon.
On to a brighter note and the month of March saw three weddings and luckily not a funeral take place. Firstly, congratulations to Bruno Cav and Katrina who were married on the Noosa River on 24 March. Bruno has been a member of QBC since the early 1980’s and we look forward to also welcoming the arrival of Bruno and Katrina’s first child due later in the year. Secondly, Friday 16th March saw an all QBC wedding between Nathan Shapter and Courtney Ellis. The rain didn’t dampen the spirit of the day, with guests wearing Hawaiian shirts while celebrating the courtship at Freshwater Surf Club. Thirdly, thank you to my beautiful new wife Lisa for turning up to our wedding on Friday 9th March held at Pilu at Freshwater Restaurant. Your dress amazed everyone invited, but you amaze me daily…
The next club contest will be held on Saturday 14th April, normal cut-off times apply. Fees are due by the April contest so if you haven’t paid your fees by check in time on the 14th you wont be wearing a contest singlet. We hope you enjoy the new look website and please feel free to pass on any recommendations or improvements you feel may enhance the site.
See you in the water,
Brad.
